Senate body wants report on fake job providers

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 11: The Senate Standing Committee on Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis has asked the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) to submit by Saturday the details of the cases in which hundreds of Pakistanis were defrauded by the overseas employment promoters.

A committee member, senator Enver Baig, told Dawn that some 3,000 Pakistanis were sent to Libya on fake recruitment through the overseas promoters and were Wandering around Pakistani embassy in Tripoli. He said the Pakistani embassy in Tripoli had also written to the Bureau of Emigration in this regard.

Earlier, the Bureau had informed the senate that complaints were received against several overseas employment promoters of Rawalpindi. Senator Enver Baig said Pakistan was facing lots of problems internationally owing to such practices by the overseas promoters in league with some officials of the Bureau.

Mr Baig said the ministry should take concrete steps to solve the problems of the overseas Pakistanis. He said the ministry had been directed to place the facts before the senate committee so that officials involved in corrupt practices could be identified.

Senator Baig said the committee had also asked for a copy of the report submitted by the Bureau about its failed attempt to send Pakistani workers to Malaysia. He said the claims about an MOU signed with Malaysian government for sending hundreds of Pakistanis had not materialized.

Earlier, in its meetings, the committee had taken notice of the lack of action by the ministry against employment promoters issuing fake advertisements to recruit people for Malaysia.

However, no disciplinary action had so far been initiated against such elements. The senator said the committee had sought details of permission for recruitment given to countries other than those in the Middle East. He said the officials had been asked to explain why the export of Pakistani manpower was declining.
