DHAKA, Jan 8: Sporadic clashes between pro-strike activists and police in some parts of Dhaka on Saturday marked a day-long countrywide shutdown in Bangladesh on the call of the Awami League.

The party called the strike to protest the increase in diesel and kerosene prices and also what it said was a "lack of adequate security" for its chief, Sheikh Hasina.
