ISLAMABAD, Jan 6: A meeting of military commanders held at the GHQ on Thursday reviewed the internal and external security situation. President Gen Pervez Musharraf presided over the meeting.

The 91st Corps Commanders Conference also discussed administrative issues to meet the challenges of the future. All corps commanders and principal staff officers attended the meeting.

Inter-Services Public Relations said that the conference also discussed the army's development perspective, focussing on operational preparedness, training and up gradation of weapons and equipment and other matters of professional interest.

The president reviewed the situation in the South Waziristan Agency and expressed satisfaction over the two-pronged politico-military strategy adopted by the defence forces which helped clear the area of militants.

The president paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives and exhibited exceptional commitment to their duty. The ISPR said that the president apprised the participants about the prevailing international and regional environment, Pakistan-India dialogue process and briefed them about the outcome of his visit to Latin American countries and meetings with the leadership of the United States, Britain and France.

It said that the president expressed grief over the loss of life and damage caused by earthquakes and tsunami in South and South East Asian countries. He appreciated the government's response and the relief efforts undertaken by the armed forces.

Referring to the army's role in nation-building, President Musharraf appreciated the work being done by army engineers for repair and rehabilitation of Sukkur Barrage and remodelling of the Left Bank Outfall Drain.

The president also lauded the efforts of personnel working in defence production who contributed to enhance defence exports and positively benefiting the national economy.
