Yasir and Basit sail into last 8
SHEFFIELD, Jan 4: Top seed Pakistanis, Yasir Butt and Basit Ashfaq moved into quarterfinals of British Junior Squash Open Under-19 following their fourth round victories at Abbeydale Squash Club here.
Also making last eight were two Egyptians, two Englishmen, one German and one American. In under-17 Bilal Zaman and Alamzeb had made it to the quarters while in under-15 Asif Khan, Tahir Iqbal and Shohaib Hassan have made it to fourth round while in under-13 Farhan Zaman and Muhammad Ali Ayub have moved into pre-quarters.
Top seed Yasir had lost opening game against Egyptian Ahmed Mohamed Shohayeb 9-10 but won remaining three games without much difficulty before making it to the round of last eight. The score being 9-3, 9-5, 9-4.
Yasir now meets Tom Richards of England, who was a winner over Jens Schoor of Germany in straight games 10-9, 10-8, 9-0. Fellow countryman and number two seed Basit had to work hard to overpower local player Shaun Le Roux in a well contested five games encounter.
Basit had won opening game 9-5 but English youngster played much better in next two games winning 9-3, 9-0. However Basit came back from two games down to win 9-6, 9-6 to move into quarterfinals.
His opponent would be Simon Rosner of Germany, who was a winner over Dutch Mathieu Castagnet in four games 9-2, 9-0, 1-9, 9-1. Egyptian Tarek Mohamed Momen beat England's James Wright 2-9, 9-4, 9-6, 9-1 and fellow countryman Ahmed Gamal Swaify over whloemed another local player Joel Hinds in straight games 9-6, 9-3, 9-2 to move into quarterfinals.
England's Chris Simpson overcame Campbell Grayson of New Zealand 10-8, 6-9, 10-8, 9-2 before moving into quarters while American youngster Chris Gordon was last player getting a berth into last eight following his straight games victory over Groose Jeppesen of Denmark 9-4, 9-2, 9-1.
In under-17, two Pakistani quarterfinalists were Bilal Zaman and Alamzeb. Bilal meets England's Chris Tasker and Alam Zeb takes on Egyptian Omar Abo Zid. Top seed Egyptian Zid would face Sandeep Jangra of India and another Egyptian Omar Abdel Magid would meet England's Tom Pashley in last quarter finals.
Asif Khan, Tahir Iqbal and Shohaib Hassan have made it to third round of the under-15. Among girls, Sara Awan lost her under-19 second round match against Malaysian Sally Looi 1-9, 6-9, 4-9 while in under-17, Maria Toor Pakay lost to Canadian Neha Kumar in straight games 1-9, 6-9, 4-9. -PPI
