Danish powers way into final

KARACHI, Jan 4: Bespectacled top seeded Danish Ahmed moved into the final of the Sindh Open tennis championship under-17 event, when he got past 14-year-old Nasir Mushtaq in straight sets at the Modern Club on Tuesday.

Danish won the first set 6-3 after Nasir put up some resistance, but in the second set, Nasir's game went to pieces, committing so many unforced errors as Danish moved in for the kill. Danish won the next set and match 6-1, and will now take on the winner of the other semi-final clash between Yasir Khan and Ali Asghar.

However, Danish's venture in the men's singles came to a halt in the quarterfinals bowing out to Khalid Ali Nazar. The first set was evenly fought with both players matching each other point for point till 5-5, when Khalid broke away to take the opening set 7-5.

Danish managed to take an early lead in the next set, but Khalid getting back into his strides picked up the second set also at 6-3 to book his place in the semi-finals.

In another encounter, top seed Aqeel Khan in a ruthless display of tennis, bundled out younger brother Jalil Khan 6-1, 6-1. Also gaining a final berth was Zuhair Reza in the under -13 event. The youngster with fine ground strokes overcame the challenge of another youngster Zarrukh 6-2, 6-2.

MEN'S SINGLES (QUARTERFINALS)
: Khalid Ali Nazar bat Danish Ahmed 7-5, 6-3; Aqeel Khan bt Jalil Khan 6-1, 6-1.

JUNIORS BOYS UNDER-17 (SEMIFINAL) : Danish Ahmed bat Nasir Mushtaq 6-3, 6-1.

BOYS UNDER-13 (SEMIFINALS) : Zuhair Reza bt Zarrukh 6-2, 6-2.
