ABBOTTABAD, Jan 2: The federal and provincial governments have announced compensation for the family of the victims of the landslide which took place here on Saturday.

All six members of a family were buried in the landslide which occurred in the wake of torrential rain.

Federal Minister Amanullah Khan Jadoon, who visited the site on the directive of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, decided to acquire at least 32 houses in the area for those people whose houses were badly damaged in the landslide.

The senior member of the Board of Revenue and the district coordination officer visited the site on the directive of NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani to provide compensation to the family.

The provincial government has announced Rs100,000 compensation for each of the dead, but no member of the family survived the landslide. A report was prepared by a representative of the chief minister for relief work in the area as most of the houses have been declared dangerous and are being vacated by the district administration to avoid further loss of life.

PPI ADDS: The Galyat received heavy snowfall followed by continuous rain, resulting in chilly weather. Two to three feet of snowfall was recorded on the hills of Thandiyani and six inches to one foot in the Galyat.
