Fata to be purged of arms, says governor

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, Dec 27: The government has planned to clean the entire tribal area of illegal arms before the elimination of the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).

An official handout issued here on Monday quoted NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain saying this talking to a delegation of the NWFP Engineering University hailing from Waziristan Agency.

He said that the authorities concerned had already devised a strategy in this regard and all types of weapons would be banned in the region. He said the government was even ready to purchase such arms and a positive headway had already been made in this connection in certain areas.

Highlighting government priorities for the development of Fata, the governor said that Rs9 billion were being spent on the development of Fata during the current financial year under a development package for the area.

The package, he said, would not only meet requirements of the tribal people in health, education and other related sectors but also generate employment opportunities at local level.

He also reiterated the determination of the government that local educated manpower would be given top priority in recruitments against vacancies to be generated through this process.

He held out an assurance to revise the amount of scholarships being given to students studying in professional institutions to bring them on a par with tuition fees of respective institutions.

He said with the establishment of medical and engineering colleges in Fata, the students from tribal area would get additional educational facilities and, as a result, the issue with regard to special quota would also be resolved on a permanent basis.

Talking about the development process in the South Waziristan Agency, the governor said that the prevailing situation in the area had also brought negative effects in this respect.

He said that a plan for the construction of three small dams in the area had been finalised but the practical work was still awaited. Meanwhile, the governor formally launched the Fata Education website here on Monday.

On this occasion the governor was briefed about the information to be disseminated through the website. The website contains all information about education sector in Fata.
