GUJRANWALA, Dec 25: Absence of traffic policemen and faulty signals on the Rawalpindi bypass intersection caused a frustrating mess on Saturday evening.

According to reports, traffic remained suspended on the bypass for two hours during which no traffic policeman turned up. About a kilometre-long queues in all the four directions presented the look of a fish market.

Passengers coming from other cities particularly faced a great deal of inconvenience. However, after two hours, the National Highway and Motorway Police in-charge, DSP Aftab Ahmad, DPO Haji Sanaullah and other police officials reached the spot and controlled the situation.

When contacted, an official concerned said the entire traffic police had been deputed in Gujrat where Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi was expected on Sunday (today).

It is pertinent to mention here that traffic jam on the GT Road near Kot Shahan had become a matter of every Tuesday due to an exhibition of cattle, but no traffic policeman is deputed there.

KILL: A woman was set ablaze by her husband on Saturday over a matrimonial dispute at Melowal village in Kamoki.

Reports said Ghulam Mustafa wanted to marry a telephone operator he had employed at his PCO, but his wife Fazellat Bibi did not allow him. The issue led to quarrel between the two after which the man sprinkled kerosene on his wife's clothes. She died after giving birth to a dead baby at the Mayo Hospital, Lahore.

Police have registered a case against the suspect.
