NA body chief stresses need to promote tourism

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: The chairperson of NA standing committee on tourism, Meena Ehsan Leghari, has stressed the need for adopting a well-coordinated strategy to promote tourism in the country.

Presiding over a meeting of the committee here at the Parliament House on Thursday, she said the country had an immense tourism potential, which if used properly, could give a boost to economy and generate employment opportunities.

"The lack of a comprehensive tourism policy, infrastucture and information about tourist destinations is the basic cause behind failure to attract foreign tourists," she added.

She asked the ministry to create an enabling environment for the tourists and provide world class facilities to them in commensuration with the rich tourist heritage and rare archaeological treasures of Pakistan.

Later, the tourism secretary briefed the committee about the scope and activities of the ministry. He informed the committee that the ministry formulated and gave necessary guidelines to all the departments under its administrative control. He said the ministry was actively involved in national tourism policy in consultation with all the stakeholders.
