KARACHI: Killing of ST activist triggers violence

KARACHI, Dec 23: A law and order situation developed in Garden area following the killing of an activist of Sunni Tehrik on Thursday. Violence spread to other localities along Nishtar Road.

According to police, the 22-year-old activist, Anis, son of Younus, was kidnapped from near the Ghousia Building in Garden at about 2am on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, his bullet-riddled body was found lying in the Orange Street, Garden. Police said that body bore five bullet wounds.

The killing enraged people of the area who took to the streets and started pelting stones at the passing vehicles in Ramsawani area. A bus of route number 7-H (JA-0761) and a van bearing registration number (B-0025) were set ablaze in the Ramsawami and Lasbela.

Unidentified people resorted to firing near Lasbela on Nishtar Road as a result of which three persons, Salman, 22, Faisal, 25, and Mehrunissa sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment.

The body of Anis was also shifted to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. A group of Sunni Tehrik activists gathered at the Civil Hospital and some of them resorted to ransacking the hospital properties. A strong contingent of police reached the hospital and arrested two ST members, Shakil and Nadeem.

As soon as the violence erupted, shops on Nishtar Road were closed and commercial activities suspended. In another incident, an activist of the defunct Sindh Democratic Alliance was shot dead near Mauripur Truck Stand on Thursday.

Police said that the 40-year-old activist, Abid, was passing through the area in his car (K-1501) when attacked by the assailants who were riding a motorcycle. The suspects intercepted the car, shot Abid near the truck stand and fled. Abid received two bullets, they added.

According to police, an ID card of a newspaper, Umeed was recovered from the possession of the deceased. His body was shifted to the Civil Hospital. The victim was father of two children and a resident of Manzoor Colony, Junejo Town. Police said that the victim had a dispute with some people associated with clearing and forwarding business.

ACCIDENT: The conductor of a passenger coach died after falling from the vehicle near Chamra Chowrangi in Korangi on Thursday. Police identified the victim as Mutiullah, 40, and said that he fell from the Marwat Coach and died instantly. His body was shifted to the JPMC for legal formalities.
