UNITED NATIONS, Dec 16: The UN General Assembly adopted on Wednesday a Pakistan-sponsored resolution entitled 'Promotion of Religious and Cultural Understanding, Harmony and Cooperation' by consensus.

Twenty other countries, including Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cape Verde, China, Costa Rica, Djibouti, Ecuador, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, Panama, Timor Leste, Sudan, Tajikistan, Togo and Tunisia co-sponsored the resolution.

The resolution takes note of President Pervez Musharraf's initiative of 'enlightened moderation' which contains the principles of enhancing human welfare, freedom and progress everywhere, of forging harmony and understanding among all peoples and of seeking peaceful solution to conflicts and disputes.

The resolution reaffirms the solemn commitment of all states to fulfil their obligations to promote universal respect for, and observance and protection of, all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all in accordance with the United Nations charter.

The resolution asks the secretary-general to ensure the widest dissemination of the relevant UN material related to this resolution and requests the secretary-general to include information on the implementation of the present resolution in his report to the next session of the General Assembly.
