Bangladeshi scientists offer help in studies on population

KARACHI, Dec 16: Bangladeshi population scientists have expressed interest in undertaking research projects and studies on population in collaboration with their Pakistani counterparts.

The scientists, along with other experts and professionals, called on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr Pirzada Qasim at the conclusion of a three-day international conference on population and development research.

Bangladeshi visitors informed the VC that since they had the expertise for advance-level research population issues and they would like to help the KU in developing its faculty for master's and postgraduate programmes in population.

Of the 15 foreigners, who met the VC on Thursday, six were from Bangladesh. During the talks, scientists from India, Nepal, and Iran expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the conference and wished that teachers and scientists belonging to regional countries be facilitated more in carrying out academic and research activities.

Peter C Miller of the Islamabad Council, Islamabad, said that recommendations of the conference be adopted and included in the policy documents of Pakistan so that issues pertaining to population welfare and planning could be addressed in a befitting manner.

The vice-chancellor assured the delegation that he would make efforts in that regard as per the discussions made with the delegates. The foreign delegates who met the VC of the Karachi varsity included Dr Elmar-Vinh Thomas, Dr Hamadi Betbont, Dr Barkat-e-Khuda, Dr Jalal Abbasi, Dr Golam Mustafa, Dr Nurul Alam, Indra P Tiwari, Peter C Miller, Paramita Dutta, Dr K Ravi Shankar, Dr Aparajita Chattopadhyah, Dr Ubaidur Rab, Jasimuddin, Unnati Rani Saha and Dr Sachi Grover and Dr Khalif Bille Mohamud.
