HYDERABAD: Teachers' body facing split

By Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Dec 16: Cracks have developed in the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association following amendments to its constitution.

A dissident group which met here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of founder of the SPLA, Prof Liaquat Aziz, has constituted "Save SPLA Forum" to challenge decisions taken at the recent convention.

Prof Aziz has been elected as chairman of the forum and Prof Karim Bhatti, Qadir Bux Dahri, Prof Parveen Channa, Siddique Unnar and Gazanfar Shah senior vice-chairman, vice-chairman, woman vice-chairman, secretary and deputy secretary, respectively.

The meeting decided to launch a coordinated campaign up to the unit-level to inform SPLA members about the state of affairs. The meeting demanded an inquiry into what it called irregularities in the annual examination 2004.

It appealed to the vice-chancellor of the Sindh University to follow rotation policy in respect of degree colleges' examinations from Dec 29 as per seniority of teachers.

It urged the Sindh government to review its policy with regards to privatization of educational institutions. It demanded that notification with regards to promotion and move-over cases be issued without delay and teachers' academy and teachers' foundation be reactivated.
