Saddam's aide to stand trial

BAGHDAD, Dec 15: Iraq announced on Wednesday that a feared aide to Saddam Hussein nicknamed "Chemical Ali" will be the first of the toppled dictator's henchmen to be tried.

Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam who earned his nickname over his alleged role in the gassing of the Kurds, will go on trial as early as next week, Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan said.

"The trials will take place from next week until mid-January, and the first to be tried will be Chemical Ali," said Shaalan, quoted by his spokesman. -AFP
