KARACHI: Two sisters killed, father injured in road crash - Water tanker set ablaze

KARACHI, Dec 15: Two young sisters died and their father was injured when a water tanker hit their motorcycle (LOG-5214) at Nagan Chowrangi on Wednesday morning.
Following the accident, enraged people caught the fleeing tanker driver, Mushtaq, and gave him a severe beating. The protesters set the water tanker (JT-3738) on fire. Yusra, 9, and Dur-i-Shahwar, 10, were on their way to school with their father Mohammad Saleem when the accident occurred.
Police said as soon as Mohammad Saleem with his daughters came out from Anarkali Complex to the service road near Masjid Siddique Akbar, a water tanker coming from the wrong side rammed into their motorcycle.
One of the girls died on the spot while the other succumbed to wounds on way to hospital. Their father suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The errant driver was rescued from protesters when police reached the spot. He was also taken to the hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.
According to the traffic police statistics, 103 trucks, trailers and dumpers are involved in accidents in which 114 people have died during the past 10 months. In the corresponding period last year, such vehicles were responsible for the deaths of 81 people in 75 accidents.
The data shows that 536 people lost their lives in road accidents this year as against 527 during the 10-month period in 2003. In another accident on Wednesday, a 12-year-old boy died in Gadani. Police said the unknown boy was riding his bicycle when a vehicle knocked him down. His body was brought to the Civil Hospital for legal formalities by the police.
SHOT DEAD: A bullet-riddled body of a young man was recovered from Shah Faisal Colony on Wednesday. Police said the body of the unknown victim in his mid-20s was recovered from Block-6 of Shah Faisal Colony.
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination. Hospital sources said the victim had suffered three bullet wounds from close range. Following formalities, the body was shifted to the Edhi morgue.
SUICIDE: A young man allegedly committed suicide in Surjani Town on Wednesday. Police said that 22-year-old Naseem Abbas hanged himself with an electric wire in his house in Qaiser Town, Sector 36-A. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for formalities.
CARJACKING: Bandits took away 27 vehicles - 12 cars and 15 motorcycles - in different areas of the metropolis on Tuesday. Police sources said that unidentified armed men snatched a Toyota Hi-Ace of the Export Promotion Zone from its driver in Samanabad. A Suzuki Alto (T-9558) was stolen in the Preedy police limits.
