KARACHI: Cell-phone users irked by faulty service

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 14: The telecommunication system of a private mobile phone company collapsed on Tuesday rendering its subscribers unable to connect to the networks of other service providers.

The subscribers of other phone companies were unable to connect to the Mobilink GSM numbers as the line dropped before the dialling process got completed. Many subscribers complained that the system completely broke down, and they were not receiving calls other than Mobilink numbers.

However, Mobilink officials said that they had got an advertisement published in dailies that the system was being upgraded and switched from frequency of 900MHz to 1800MHz, and the process might be over by the end of December.

They said that the subscribers might face some problems during the period of upgrading. The subscribers claimed that the connection from a phone of PTCL or other service providers was not established despite repeated attempts throughout the day.

Sources said that the Mobilink and Ufone companies, with a view to entice more subscribers, had sold out more connections than the capacities of their respective systems, resulting in the congestion, which had become a routine.

Sources in the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said the complaints about non-connectivity against the Mobilink GSM were received. However, they said that the PTA had been monitoring the situation, and the company had assured the authority that the connectivity problem would be removed by the end of current month. They said if the problem persisted after December, the PTA might take action against the service provider.
