'Gwadar port, highway completed'

ISLAMABAD, Dec 10: Gwadar deep seaport has been completed ahead of stipulated time and is ready for inauguration early next year, a meeting held here on Friday with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in the chair was informed.

The meeting, which reviewed the pace of work on the port, was told that the coastal highway connecting Karachi to Gwadar had also been completed while the feasibility study for connecting the port by rail would be completed by May next year.

It was further informed that the expansion work on the Gwadar airport had started. The National Highway Authority chairman briefed the meeting about progress of work on roads.

The prime minister directed the concerned authorities to ensure that the offices of national institutions like banks, state life, etc., were set up in Gwadar's Jinnah Avenue.

He said Gwadar seaport would play a vital role in generation of economic activity in Balochistan and help create job opportunities for local people. The construction of roads, he added, would bring prosperity to the area. Ministers for ports and shipping, communications, railways and commerce attended the meeting.
