PPP condemns US envoy's remarks

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Dec 10: Punjab PPP Information Secretary Naveed Chaudhry has taken exception to US ambassador's reported remarks that elections will be held in 2007.

In a statement here on Friday, he said election was an internal matter of Pakistan, and the US envoy had no right to say when they would or should be held.

Instead of acting as viceroy, the PPP leader said, the US ambassador should confine himself to his diplomatic assignments. He said the US continued changing the definition of democracy.

While president Bill Clinton during his visit to Pakistan had refused to be photographed with Gen Musharraf on the grounds that he was not a democratic leader, President Bush was calling the same man as a close ally.

Meanwhile, Punjab PPP President Qasim Zia has called a meeting of the party's executive for Dec 14 to discuss methodology to make the ARD's Dec 20 public meeting a success.
