KARACHI, Dec 9: The city government plans to grow mini-forests in four different parts of Karachi, it is learnt. Sources in the city government said on Thursday that these mine-forests would be grown at Thado Dam in Gadap Town , Haleji Lake, Macch Goth in Baldia Town and Gutter Baghicha in Site Town.

The plan has been submitted with City Nazim for approval. Work on the project is expected to be started soon after the approval as all formalities attached to the plan have been completed. The city government had taken the initiative on its own whereas the agriculture department had been working on the plan for quite some time, the sources said.

When asked about water, an essential requirement for growing such forests, the sources pointed out that natural water reservoirs existed in some of the identified areas whereas arrangements would be made for the purpose where such a source did not exist.

For one of the proposed mini-forests, water would be drawn from the Haleji Lake and for another one, at Macch Goth, it would be arranged by raising the walls of the Queens Lake located near the hills of Hub. The Thado Dam in Gadap Town is being constructed to store rainwater which would be supplied to yet another proposed mini-forest. -PPI
