Troops kill two in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Indian soldiers shot dead two militants in occupied Kashmir hours before Indian President Abdul Kalam was set to visit frontline troops.

The two were killed in Baramulla district in a pre-dawn firefight after they stormed into a house planning to kidnap a ruling party activist, a police spokesman said.

Residents of the house escaped unharmed. The president addressed troops stationed in Kargil, scene of the deadly two-month confrontation high in the Himalayas in 1999.

Security was stepped up for the president's visit to Srinagar, which last week witnessed four grenade attacks in two days and is the urban hub of militant outfits. -AFP
