ANP concerned over law, order

Published December 7, 2004

KARACHI, Dec 6: The Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of lawlessness, hooliganism, looting of buses on national highways and on city roads, while deploring the role of the police for failing to provide security to citizens.

The ANP Sindh meeting held on Monday at the Bacha Khan Centre, and presided by the ANP provincial president, Shahi Syed, passed resolutions in which party leaders said that the police was not playing its due role for the safety of the lives and property of citizens.

The participants said a majority of policemen had been deputed at residences of VIPs while lawbreakers were given a free hand to create uncertainty for citizens. The ANP demanded the government to instead assign the police for the protection of people's lives, as the rich could afford hiring private security guards.

The meeting also condemned the government's move to build controversial projects like the Kalabagh Dam and Greater Thal Canal. They said assemblies of all the smaller provinces had already passed unanimous resolutions against these projects. Therefore, there was no need to continue with the projects, it observed. - PPI
