PESHAWAR: University teachers' body elects office-bearers

PESHAWAR, Dec 1: The Tanzeem-i-Asatiza won the Peshawar University Teachers' Association (Puta) annual election 2004-2005 for the third consecutive year.

According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, Puta annual elections between the Tanzeem-i-Asatiza and the Progressive Group were held at the Teachers' Community Centre at the University of Peshawar.

About 90 per cent of the college and university teachers voted in the election in which Prof Dr Abdul Hamid Jan of the Department of Zoology was elected president of Puta.

The Tanzeem-i-Asatiza won almost all the important seats. Prof Dr Abdul Hamid Jan was contesting against the joint candidate of Progressive and Friends groups, Dr Bashir Ahmed. Mukhtar Ali Durrani and Taskeen Shagufta were elected vice presidents.

Dr Hizbullah from the Department of Environmental Sciences, who was a candidate from the Progressive-Friends group, was elected General-Secretary. Tanzeem-i-Asatiza candidates Ataullah (Geography Department), Prof Dr Saeed-ur-Rehman (Chemistry Department) and Anwar Alam (Sociology Department) won the posts of joint secretary, finance secretary and sports secretary respectively.

Dr Altafullah (Journalism Department), a Progressive Alliance candidate, was elected Literary Secretary. Dr Mohammad Abid and Shahida Zakir of the Tanzeem-i-Asatiza and Naeem-ur-Rehman Khattak and Jehanzeb Khan of the Progressive-Friends Alliance were elected executive members, the press release said.

The elections were conducted under the supervision of Prof Syed Sajjad Hussain Shah of the Social Work Department.
