31 die in Indonesian plane crash

JAKARTA, Nov 30: At least 31 people were killed and 61 injured On Tuesday when a passenger plane skidded off a rain-slicked runway after landing in Indonesia's Central Java province, police said.

They were among some 146 passengers and seven crew aboard the plane operated by budget airline Lion Air, which was landing at Adisumarno airport in the city of Solo after a flight from Jakarta.

"I have received information that 23 people have died and 61 people are injured," Central Java police chief told reporters in a report on local radio. "Let's hope that the casualties will not increase," he said.

The injured were taken to hospitals across Solo. He said about 30 people are being treated at a hospital. Heavy rain and a pitch-black night are hindering efforts by rescuers and local residents, ElShinta radio reported. -Agencies
