Media steps up campaign against Annan

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 23: The right wing American media have stepped up attacks on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, with some suggesting that he leave his post, despite the confidence expressed in his leadership by the staff unions.

"You can hardly blame Kofi Annan if he's spending a lot of his free time these days touching up his resume," the conservative Washington Times said in a commentary on Monday.

"For even by UN standards, the oil-for-food scandal; misconduct charges against senior UN officials (and furious complaints by UN employees in recent days that Mr Annan is covering up); and the organization's failure to stop genocide in Sudan represent a low point for a world body that had fallen into disrepute decades ago." Similar attacks are being carried out on the electronic media.
