ISLAMABAD, Nov 23: An exhibition of paintings done by late Rafeuz Zaman started here at the Khaas Gallery on Monday amidst much fanfare, reflecting visual symbology and spontaneity of the artist's work.
As many as 25 pieces were put on display, giving an insight to Rafe's works spanning over six decades from 1926 to 2000. The paintings depicted his unique style as well as the harmony of his inner feelings.
The first two paintings are titled "Awe" and "Zoomorphic Humanism", while three others are called "figure", "the three", "above" and "The Cross". The rest are untitled.
Rafe believed that his paintings were a celebration of colours and basic forms. What comes out strongly in his works is dominance of his art, which served as a dialogue that kept him and his inner self engaged to produce most exciting results.
He was blessed with energy and power that motivated him to express his innermost emotions. Rafe, son of Dr Salimuzzaman Siddiqui, had had impressive academic career.
He had to his credit B.A. (Hons.) in English from Delhi University in 1943. He also did post graduation in Philosophy from the same university in 1946. Besides, he did Masters in Journalism in 1951.
He was fluent in Urdu, English and German languages. He remained associated with Pakistan Television, Rawalpindi, from 1973 to 1975. He also served as PTV director education. His retrospective exhibition, celebrating six decades of his art, was held at the Shakir Ali Museum in Lahore in 2004.
Former PTV managing director Aslam Azhar, who had worked with Rafe at television, also visited the exhibition with his wife. He recalled the artist fondly and talked about his passion for music. Rafe's wife Rabea was also present at the Khaas Gallery.
For long, works of Rafeuzzaman were unknown to the young generation. He is reputed to have painted and sculpted at an unbelievable pace to produce some of his best works till his death on January 15, 2000.
