GENEVA, Nov 16: The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, urged US-led multinational forces on Tuesday to probe and prosecute deliberate killings of wounded people and civilians in the embattled Iraqi city of Fallujah.
"The High Commissioner considers that all violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law must be investigated," Ms Arbour said in a statement released by her office.
"Those responsible for breaches - including deliberate targeting of civilians, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks, the killing of injured persons and the use of human shields - must be brought to justice, be they members of the Multinational Force or insurgents," she added.
Ms Arbour's statement was released a day after US television channels showed footage of a US soldier in the city shooting at a wounded man at close range in a mosque in Fallujah.
The US army said it was investigating the incident and had withdrawn the soldier from the battlefield. Ms Arbour said she was also deeply concerned about civilians caught up in the fighting between US forces and insurgents for control of the Iraqi city.
"There have been a number of reports during the current confrontation alleging violations of the rules of war designed to protect civilians and combatants," she said.-AFP
