KARACHI, Nov 13: Former prime minister of India, Inder Kumar Gujral, on Friday assured the support of Indian politicians and people to the founder of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Altaf Hussain, in his efforts to improve the relationship between Islamabad and New Delhi.
During a meeting with Mr Hussain at his residence in New Delhi, Mr Gujral appreciated Mr Hussain's positive thinking and struggle for the rights of the oppressed people of the region, a statement issued by the MQM said.
He assured Mr Hussain that the steps taken by the MQM for improving relations between India and Pakistan had full support of all the Indian politicians and people.
Mr Hussain hailed Mr Gujral's views and said people of India and Pakistan had suffered too much. He advised the people of the region to learn from the initiatives of the European Union.
The two leaders discussed, among other things, matters pertaining to the opening of the Khokhrapar-Monabao borders, restoration of visa services and opening of Indian consulate in Karachi, ferry service between Karachi and Mumbai, easing of visa process, visa exemption for the people over 60 years of age, and improvement of relations between the two countries.
Mr Hussain also welcomed Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's announcement to reduce Indian troops in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and said that would help in restoring peace and strengthening friendship, not only between India and Pakistan but also in the region.
He expressed the hope that meaningful dialogue would continue in the right direction for a sustainable relationship between the two countries.
Later on Friday night, Mr Hussain attended a dinner hosted by Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi Aziz Ahmad Khan.
The MQM leader visited the samadhi of Mahatama Gandhi, observed a minute's silence there, lighted a candle as mark of respect and recorded his impressions in the visitors' book.
Mr Hussain also attended a dinner hosted by Rajya Sabha member Nirmala Deshpande at her residence.
