By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Nov 11: President Pervez Musharraf has granted special remission to prisoners in sentences on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

The remission has been granted on the advice of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

A notification issued by the interior ministry said that a special remission of 90 days would be granted to prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment except those undergoing jail term for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, adultery , robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction and terrorists acts.

Similarly, a remission of 45 days has been given to other convicts except condemned prisoners and those undergoing sentences under the Foreigners Act 1946.

However, these remissions would be admissible only if convicts had undergone two-third of their substantive sentence of imprisonment.

Those convicted in cases processed by the National Accountability Bureau would not be entitled to any remission, the notification said.

Men who are 65 years of age or above and have served at least one-third of their imprisonment sentences, except those involved in culpable homicide or terrorist acts, would enjoy total remission.

Similarly, a total remission has been granted to woman inmates who are 60 years of age or above and have undergone at least one-third of their imprisonment sentences, except those involved in culpable homicide or terrorists acts.

The president has also granted a special remission of one year to women prisoners who have their children with them and are serving imprisonment sentences for crimes other than culpable homicide or involvement in terrorist activities.

Total remission have also been granted to juvenile convicts under 18 years of age, who have served one-third of their sentences except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist acts, adultery, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction or anti-state activities.

The notification has already been circulated to the home secretaries of Punjab, Sindh, the NWFP and Balochistan and the chief secretary of the Northern Areas.
