PESHAWAR, Nov 11: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Sami), a component of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), would not take part in the alliance's up-coming campaign against President Pervez Musharraf for holding dual offices of the president and the chief of army staff beyond Dec 31.
"It is Qazi Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Fazlur Rehman's headache," said Maulana Haamid-ul-Haq, MNA and elder son of JUI(S) chief Maulana Sami-ul-Haq.
Instead of taking part in MMA's campaign against the president, JUI(S) is planning to hold a 'show of power' after Eid in Nowshera district to protest against the NWFP government.
Maulana Haamid, who is also the vice-president of the NWFP chapter of the JUI(S), talking to Dawn said that on the day of protest against the provincial government his party's workers from the Nowshera district would block the Grand Trunk road.
"The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam(Fazl) and the Jamat-i- Islami's failure to deliver during their government's two-year rule has adversely affected our party's credibility, therefore, we are taking our case to the masses," said Maulana Haamid.
In reply to a question, he said that the JUI(S) would not become partner in MMA's campaign because it did not find any reason to launch the campaign. "It is a non-issue," he said.
First the JUI(F) and the JI, said Maulana Haamid on Wednesday, provided safe passage to President Musharraf by entering into an agreement with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League giving constitutional cover to Legal Framework Order and now, he added, they were trying to 'deceive the masses' by launching a protest against the president's uniform.
Similar views were expressed by the Senior Vice-President of his party's NWFP chapter, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, from Mardan. Mr Ahmed said that it was for the JUI(F) and the JI to carry out the campaign on their own as "we are not partners into it for not having being consulted on the issue".
Both the leaders, talking to Dawn separately, said that formal decision with regard to staying away from MMA's scheduled campaign would be taken during a meeting of the party's leaders after Eid.
"Why shall we be taking part in their campaign after we have not been made true partner in the NWFP government," said Mr Ahmed, adding that "the JUI(F) and the JI have been running the MMA's affairs on their own, hence, they should also pursue the protesting course on their own."
Maulana Haamid said that the JUI(F) and the JI ignored smaller parties of the alliance and they were not taken along after the MMA established the government in the Frontier province.
The JI, he maintained, had appointed bureaucrats of its own choice at important posts who, he added, were acting as JI activists while running the government affairs.
"District coordination officer of Nowshera (where his constituency is situated) does not listen to us, we have been ignored in the constitution of Zakat committees, we have been given no representation in education ministry," said Maulana Haamid.
Similarly, he maintained, development funds had been diverted to Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani, his party chief Maulana Fazl and JI chief Qazi Hussain's constituencies whereas constituencies from where the candidates of JUI(S) returned to the national and provincial assemblies were being ignored.
Dismayed by the JUI(F) and JI's policies, JUI(S) chief Maulana Sami has not attended meetings of the Supreme Council of the MMA for the last eight months and has lashed out at the MMA-led NWFP government's policies in public meetings arranged by his party in the recent past.
