PPP wants fishing contracts cancelled

By Our Correspondent

BADIN, Nov 8: The leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Mr Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, has demanded that fishing contracts given to Rangers in coastal areas of Sindh should be cancelled.

Talking to families of fishermen at the Abdul Majeed Abid Hall here on Monday, he further demanded that check-posts of Rangers set up at a distance of 15-25 kilometres from border areas should be abolished.

Mr Khuhro said the Sindh government could not solve problems of fishermen of Badin coastal areas as the matter was related to the interior ministry.

He criticized Rangers for depriving local fishermen of their fishing rights.

He claimed that assurances given by the Sindh chief minister and the Sindh population minister were hollow and aimed at cooling down the issue of poor fishermen.

Mr Khuhro said the People's Party Parliamentarians would raise the issue at every forum, adding that the PPP had requisitioned a session of the Sindh Assembly for Nov 19 to discuss the matter of alleged victimization of fishermen by Rangers.

Syed Jamilur Rehman and other PPP leaders also spoke on the occasion.
