QUETTA, Nov 8: Personnel of the Anti-Narcotics Force have foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs and ammunition in the Qila Kurd area of Chagai district.

ANF Dalbandin troops on Monday combed Qila Kurd after cordoning off the whole area. During the massive search operation, 585 kilogrammes of morphine and 3,500 rounds of AK-47 rounds were recovered.

"The consignment of drugs and ammunition was dumped under stones," ANF sources said. They said drugs had been brought from across the border for onward shipment to European countries and Gulf States through Coastline of Makran.

However, no one was arrested.

In another raid, personnel of the Frontier Corps recovered 50 kilograms of heroin and 10 107mm rockets from the Amri area in Kharan district.

No arrest was made in the raid.

APP adds: Frontier Corps destroyed opium crops cultivated over 2,514 acres in Balochistan during the current year.

The deputy inspector-general of FC said this during a briefing here on Monday.

The FC, he said, had destroyed 5,734 acres of opium crop in 2003 during a special drive against poppy cultivation in the province.

During the past five years, it also seized illegal weapons, smuggled vehicles and other contrabands worth Rs 6.43 billion, he said, adding that FC personnel also arrested 14,261 illegal immigrants and migrants belonging to different nationalities from the border areas during the same period.

The Frontier Corps, in addition to its routine duties, also took part in social welfare activities and played a vital role in providing basic amenities to people of remote areas, he said.
