GUJRANWALA, Nov 4: Jewellers went on shutter down strike and demonstrated against the police for their failure to arrest the bandits who escaped after looting a shop in Sarrafa Bazaar here on Thursday.
Owner Muhammad Akber of Afzal jewellers was present in his shop when two dacoits stepped in. The intruders held him up at gunpoint, tied him with a rope, collected Rs200,000 in cash, jewellery worth Rs800,000 and escaped.
The jewellers shut their shops when they came to know about the dacoity incident and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. They also demonstrated and chanted slogans against the police. Later, they called off their strike when a senior police officer reached there along with a heavy police contingent and assured them that culprits would soon be arrested.
Meanwhile, a bus was on its way to Lahore from Sialkot when five outlaws in the guise of passengers snatched cash, jewellery and other valuables from passengers. They escaped when bus guards opened fire on them on the Sialkot Road near Aroop village.
PROTEST: Over hundred students of midwifery course of the DHQ Hospital strongly protested against the administration for not paying them scholarship for the last eight months.
A delegation of midwifery course students on Thursday met with the medical superintendent who sought report on non-payment of scholarships immediately.
As per reports, around 100 girls were admitted to the DHQ Hospital midwifery course in February this year while their scholarship was fixed at Rs2,040 per head.
It was stated that last year students of midwifery course were also deprived of their three-month scholarship. They demanded of the Punjab government and health ministry to release their scholarship immediately as they were facing financial problems during their course.
The DHQ account office said the scholarship payment case of midwifery course students had already been sent to the district administration and the health department.
