SHEIKHUPURA, Nov 4: An alleged proclaimed offender was shot dead in what, Bhekhi police claimed, a seven-hour-long encounter with them near Makki 425 village early on Thursday. Constables Afzal and Nawaz were injured in the armed clash.
According to reports, the PO and four of his accomplices after snatching weapons from sub-inspector Sharif and two constables were fleeing towards Makki 425 village. Receiving information, a police party led by Bhekhi SHO Arslan Khan chased the outlaws who hid themselves under bushes and opened fire on the police.
In an exchange of fire that followed and continued for seven hours, PO Umar Hayat alias Umri suffered serious injuries and died after some time. Constables Afzal and Nawaz suffered injuries.
Eyewitnesses, however, described the encounter as staged one as they claimed that the PO was already in the police custody during which he was shot dead. The constables inflicted wounds on themselves, they added.
According to the police, the deceased was involved in dozen of heinous crimes and wanted by Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala and Hafizabad police.
SUMMONED: District and Sessions Judge Allah Bakhsh Ranjha has summoned for Nov 5 (today) a former SHO and an ASI on the complaint of Muslim Student Federation senior vice-president Asad Nawaz Virk.
The complainant submitted in court that A-Division police former SHO Naveed Sikandar and ASI Sajid Shah trespassed on his house, which was not located in the jurisdiction of his police station.
The intruders ransacked the house and took away ornaments and other valuables worth Rs300,000. The police suspected that he had given shelter to a robber, he said.
The complainant in his writ petition requested the court to get his booty recovered from the policemen and order registration of a case against the police officials under section 392.
CASE: The district police have registered a case against canal water thieves on the complaint of Upper Chenab Canal, Sheikhupura, XEN Waseem Butt.
The XEN told newsmen that the police conducted raids at various distributaries and found 1,403 farmers involved in water theft.
Deputy collector Syed Sibtul Hassan Shah said two patwaris were suspended from service on the charge of dereliction of duties and several other staffers issued show-cause notices in this connection.
