Aziz stresses merit in recruitment: Housing societies' role reviewed

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday reviewed the performance of the Federal Public Service Commission and cooperative housing societies in the country.

Talking to FPSC chairman Jamshed Gulzar Kiani, the prime minister said the government believed in the policy of merit and would like to see that all institutions followed this principle in letter and in spirit.

Appreciating the commission's performance, he said it was one of the most prestigious and credible institutions in the country. Mr Kiani briefed the premier about the recent automation of the FPSC which, according to him, had helped improve the working of the commission. He said the period from the publication of an advertisement for a job to recruitment had now been reduced from month to days.

The chairman, who called on Mr Aziz at the prime minister's house, said that capacity-building programmes were being conducted for officers and staff to upgrade their skills. He said the system of recruitment tests as well as the syllabi had been improved with a view to bringing them in conformity with the requirements of modern times.

Meanwhile, the premier called for an effective implementation of the cooperative societies law which, he said, should ensure streamlining of the functioning of cooperative housing societies.

Reviewing the report of the task force on cooperative societies, he stressed the need for measures to protect the interests of customers. He said the Islamabad Capital Administration should serve as a model in this regard and provincial governments should be requested to follow the procedure.

Mr Aziz observed that cooperative housing societies had played an important role in the development of the housing sector and some of them had provided plots to its members in an efficient and transparent manner. He said while it was important to encourage such societies, it was also important to streamline the functioning of these societies.
