Detention of KRL scientist extended

By Nasir Iqbal

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The Federal Review Board of the Supreme Court on Saturday extended the detention period of Director-General of Science and Technology, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Dr Mohammad Farooq, for another 90 days, court sources told Dawn.

Dr Farooq, the only scientist who has been still under detention for the last 10 months for his alleged involvement in the transfer of the nuclear technology, was produced before the board comprising two judges of the Supreme Court Justice Hamid Ali Mirza and Justice Falak Sher.

Dr Mohammad Farooq was detained on Nov 23, 2003, under the Security of Pakistan Act, 1952, for his alleged involvement in the proliferation of nuclear technology.

The review board, constituted under Article 10(4) of the Constitution, meets after every three months to consider the detention of the person/persons involved in acts prejudicial to the integrity, security, defence or external affairs of Pakistan.

Earlier on July last, the government had released three officials of the KRL on the recommendations of the review board.

Those released were: Dr Mohammad Nazir, Director-General of Science and Technology; Brig (rtd) Sajawal Khan, Director-General of Maintenance and Construction Division; and Major (retd) Islamul Haque, Personal Staff Officer of the KRL founder, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan.
