Dissolution won't hit MMA: Fazl

Published October 24, 2004

NOWSHERA, Oct 23: The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said that in case of dissolution of parliament, the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) will lose nothing as compared to the loss of many bigwigs of the government.

He was speaking to newsmen during his visit to the city to offer condolence on the death of the elder brother of Qazi Hussain Ahmad here on Saturday. JUI-F general secretary and MNA Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, and MPA Maulana Mujahid Khan were present on the occasion.

The opposition leader said the MMA would continue struggle for the restoration of the Constitution and force the president to shed his military uniform by Dec 31, in accordance with a deal reached between the religious alliance and the government earlier this year.

Maulana Fazl said Gen Musharraf should not back out of his commitment made with the nation to shed his uniform.

He criticized the West and the European Union, saying that they were doing politics to safeguard their own interests by issuing statements that the issue of uniform should be resolved in parliament.

The MMA leader said the US and UK were saying that by attacking Iraq and removing Saddam Hussein from power, they had freed the Iraqi nation from dictatorship, but here they were backing a dictator for their own interests.

About the no-confidence motion against the speaker, he said it was not necessary that the motion would be successful. But through this step, the joint opposition had registered their protest against the speaker for his partisan role in conducting the business of the house.

About the National Security Council, he said that although it was a legal institution, but the opposition was not taken into confidence when the NSC bill was enacted through parliament.

He said the opposition had reservations that an institution set up through an act of parliament should be headed by a uniformed employee of the government.

Asked if the NWFP chief minister and the leader of the opposition would attend the NSC meeting after Eidul Fitr, he said a decision on the issue would be taken by the MMA supreme council.
