Aziz orders KCR restoration

ISLAMABAD, Oct 21: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday ordered the Ministry of Railways to immediately start work for restoration of the Karachi Circular Railways.

Presiding over a meeting here, the prime minister directed the Ministry of Railways to do a quick stock-taking of the infrastructure available and fiscal implications involved in the project.

The meeting decided to constitute a task force to be headed by Minister of State for Railways Ishaq Khakwani with Adil Siddiqui, Provincial Minister for Transport, and EDO transport of the City Government as members to gearing up the restoration work.

Premier Aziz said on the occasion that the Circular Railways should be collective responsibility and liability of the Railways, Karachi City Government and the Sindh Government.

The meeting directed the Karachi City Government and the Sindh government to prepare a PC-1 for the Karachi Mass Transit and send it to the Planning Commission for evaluation and approval.

The meeting was attended among others by Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Salman Shah, Minister of State for Railways Ishaq Khakwani, Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister of Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri, Chairman of the Planning Commission, Karachi City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, Dr Farooq Sattar and Sindh Minister for Transport Adil Siddiqui.

The newly-appointed chairpersons of various committees of the National Assembly including Begum Mehanz Rafi, Dr Noor Jehan Panizai, Fizza Jueno, Dr Nisar Meena Leghari, Pir Muhammad Shah Khagga, and Gule Farkhanda also met the prime minister.

Talking to them, Mr Aziz expressed the hope that they would work hard to bring about visible improvement in the working of their miniseries and departments.
