Ex-Kashmir minister shot dead

SRINAGAR, Oct 21: Suspected Muslim freedom fighters on Thursday shot dead a former minister in India's insurgency-racked Kashmir, police said.

Veteran politician Safdar Ali Baig, who belonged to the pro-India regional National Conference Party, was murdered as he emerged from his home in Sarnal in southern Anantnag district, police said.

The attackers fired repeatedly at Baig, who served as minister in the government of Farooq Abdullah between 1996 and 2002 and his security guard.

Baig was declared dead on arrival at hospital and the guard was battling for his life.-AFP
