ISLAMABAD, Oct 21: A breach of privilege motion was submitted against the State Minister for Economic Affairs, Hina Rabbani Khar on Thursday for giving what a member said were "conflicting figures" to the house.

The motion was submitted to the National Assembly secretariat along with copy of supporting documents by MNA Chaudhry Abid Sher Ali under rules of procedure.

The motion claimed the state minister breached the privilege of the House and the MNA concerned by "under-reporting" and "misinforming" the National Assembly.

According to the privilege motion, the information about foreign grants and aids was sought several times from the quarters concerned but each time a different and varying answer was given.

The motion, including different annexures, said the state minister did not provide true picture of the grants received by the government from foreign sources.

Earlier, on Wednesday, a government spokesperson, strongly denied that Ms Khar had presented wrong figures in National Assembly on October 18 about grants received in the education sector.

"The question asked was related to a specific period and hence only the relevant information was provided. The government stands by the information submitted previously and finds no contradiction," said the spokesperson on behalf of the minister.

According to the annexures attached with the breach of privilege motion, the amount received from Germany, Canadian International Development Agency, United Kingdom, Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and other sources amounting to millions of dollars were not provided to the House by the state minister on October 18.

The motion also said the October 18 reply by Ms Khar did not include information regarding agreements with different countries as asked by MNA Shabir Ahmed Khan on March 12.

The motion also claimed that the October 18 reply by Ms Khar did not include partial details provided by the former education minister Zobaida Jalal regarding foreign assistance received by the government for the education sector.

Talking to journalists, Abid Sher Ali rejected the contention of Ms Khar that the information could have been revealed in the supplementary questions had the member concerned been present in the House on October 18.

He said the opposition had decided not to attend the session as a vote of no-confidence was pending against the NA speaker but the same could not be used as an excuse by the minister to what he said was an attempt to hide the foreign assistance received for the education sector.

Reportedly, the government has refused to accept any US funding for mainstreaming of madressahs during meetings with visiting US assistant secretary of state for South Asia, Christina Rocca, fearing it would face allegations of following a foreign agenda.

The MNA said concealment of correct figures could have disastrous consequences for the country because if the amount was not brought on record it could lead to embezzlement of the amount.
