GILGIT: PPP supporters block KKH

GILGIT, Oct 18: Supporters of the People's Party Parliamentarians candidate, Aftab Haider, from NA-III Gilgit blocked the Karakoram Highwayon Monday for three hours near Matumadas.

Sources said that the PPP supporters blocked the KKH to protest against the decision of the local administration in which the rival candidate, Muzaffar Ali, was declared successful after the recounting of votes in the NA-III constituency.

The administration has espoused the plea of the rival candidate without taking into account the circumstantial evidences, Mr Haider said.

A dispute erupted in NA-III Gilgit during the recounting process when officials found that at least 457 ballot papers voted to Aftab Haider were without the official stamp at their back and over 224 ballot papers voted to his rival were also found unstamped.

Mr Haider said that the mistakes on the part of the polling staff was engineered and premeditated as they mistakes occurred in the polling station where he was leading with big margin. However, the administration after a three-day deadlock finally tilted in favour of Muzaffar Ali.

Mr Haider said that he would go to the election tribunal which would be established to hear the election-related cases.

The Northern Areas Election Commission announced three more official results of NALC elections including Muzaffar Ali (NA-III Gilgit), Hafizur Rahman of the PML-N (NA-II Gilgit) and Fida Mohammad Nashad of PML (NA-IX Skardu).
