KARACHI: Diarrhoea outbreak subsiding

Published October 19, 2004

KARACHI, Oct 18: The outbreak of diarrhoea, which claimed two lives in a village in Surjani Town, showed signs of subsiding on Monday.

Eight people, however, were reportedly very sick who were later referred either to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre or a private hospital situated nearby.

According to Rizwan Edhi, more than 50 patients were treated on Monday at a medical camp set up by the Edhi Foundation. He said many of the patients treated there had earlier been admitted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital or the Jinnah hospital.

"This means that the source of the problem still remains to be dealt with comprehensively," said Rizwan. Many people from the nearby villages also turned up at the camp for medical advice, he added.

"This is another worry. This means that the problem is not limited to the Nek Mohammad Goth, which was considered as the epicentre of the outbreak. Rather, this shows that the problem may be more widespread than originally thought."
