Jayasuriya helps Sri Lanka to victory in final

By Rehan Siddiqui

LAHORE, Oct 16: Sri Lanka, defying odds and the dew factor exacted revenge for two league defeats as they overwhelmed Pakistan by 119 runs in the final to lift the tri-nation trophy on Saturday at Qadhafi Stadium.

Set to overhaul Sri Lanka's imposing 287 for seven, Pakistan batsmen were bundled out for 168 in 38 overs. It was a total reversal of the performance from Pakistan batsmen, who had successfully chased 293 last Thursday.

Sri Lankas owe their success to a team effort but two men, batsman-wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara and old war-horse Sanath Jayasuriya stood out with individual performance.

Sangakkara, tipped to be next Sri Lankan captain, scored a run-a-ball 68 and was involved in the dismissal of three batsmen in Pakistan innings. He was deservedly named Man-of-the-Match.

Jayasuriya, having failed with the bat in previous two outings, returned with the impressive figures of 8-2-17-5 to hasten Pakistan's slide towards an ignominous defeat.

None of the Pakistani batsmen applied themselves and threw their wickets at regular intervals by playing injudicious strokes. Skipper Inzamamul Haq and Yousuf Youhana between them just managed 11 runs which tells the sad story how the Pakistanis buckled under pressure.

Only young Salman Butt, who topscored with (40) and Shoaib Malik (37), voted Man-of-the-Series, showed defiance but could not prevent the Islanders from winning convincingly.

Pakistan have yet to win a triangular tournament or any major competition on its soil during the last decade.

The defeat also exposed the claims of PCB and the team management including coach Bob Woolmer and his army of assistants, hired on astronomical sums that the side was showing improvement.

Since Woolmer took over Pakistan failed to make the final of Asian Cup in Colombo, lost to Australia in Amsterdam triangular and werebeaten by a struggling West Indies side in the Champions Trophy.

Sri Lankan innings was almost a re-run of the Friday match between the two sides after Inzamamul Haq's luck with the toss continued and he invited the visitors to bat first for the second successive time in the tournament.

A similar start to last Thursday saw Sri Lanka lose the openers cheaply. Saman Jayantha was run out in the first over and Sanath Jayasuriya was unlucky to be given out by Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar, caught by Inzamam off Rana Naveedul Hasan.

Marvan Atapattu (66) and Kumar Sangakkara (68) again steadied innings by adding 106 before both got out to rash strokes when well set for a big score.

Atapautta was stumped off a wide ball having faced 94 balls and struck six fours while Sanagakkara played on to Abdul Razzaq attempting an extravagant cover drive. His 69-ball knock contained seven boundaries.

Mahela Jayawardene (49 off 54balls) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (39 off 37 balls) pushed the score along but the Sri Lankans failed to accelerate in the last ten overs although at one stage the visitors were on course for a total of over 300.

Pakistan's outcricket specially catching, not for the first time, was below international standards. Inzamam spilled a sitter offered by Atapattu when on 25, Shoaib Malik failed to hang on to a hard chance off Sangakkara and Yasir Hameed put down Jayasuriyawhen the opener was on one.

The home attack never looked threatening on an easy paced pitch and except for Naveed all the bowlers took a hammering.

Shoaib Akhtar, declared fit, and given the newball was the biggest disappointment. He bowled with fire his first spell of four overs conceding 11 runs. But he ran out of steam and in his next three overs conceded 30 runs to finish with figures of none for 41. Sohaib's seventh over, that proved to be his last was the costliest which he was hammered for 15 runs.

He was immediately taken off and not called in to complete full quota of overs for the second time in the series.
