NAWABSHAH, Oct 16: Members of the Sindh Abadgar Board, Nawabshah, took out a procession here on Friday to protest against cotton ginners for their refusal to pay the fixed price of Rs925 per 40kg, and illegal deduction of 5kg per 40kg.

Led by SAB district secretary-general Zahid Hussain Shah, the protesters set out from Gharibabad, carrying banners and chanted slogans against ginners.

Marching through main thoroughfares, they gathered at the District Nazim secretariat to hold a protest demonstration.

District Nazim Faryal Talpur was not available. However, DO (revenue) Manzoor Soomro listened to the farmers' complaints and received their memorandum.

Later, the protesters blocked the road opposite the Press Club.

Speaking to the protesters, Mr Shah alleged that ginners were selling cotton to the Trading Corporation of Pakistan at Rs2,314 per 40kg.

The farmers demanded that the district nazim should bound cotton ginners to pay the fixed price, failing which, they would resort to extreme action, consequences of which would rest on the ginners as well as the government.

Meanwhile, naib nazims of Nawabshah taluka, including Abdul Qayoom Arain, Ghafoor Bhangwar, and Ali Ahmed Khaskheli, announced that if farmers did not receive the fixed price, they would protest along with the taluka nazim on Oct 16.

TEACHERS PROTEST: Members of the Primary Teachers Association, Nawabshah, held a demonstration outside the Press Club on Friday to demand immediate regularization of contract teachers.

Led by Mohammad Ashraf Brohi, the protesters carried placards and raised slogans against the government.

NEWSMAN LOOTED: Some unidentified armed men barged into the house of Ali Mohammad Lakyari, district reporter of Daily Sham, in Azeem colony, early on Friday, and looted cash, camera, cell phone and other valuables, and fled.

A case has been lodged with the A-section police.
