KARACHI, Oct 14: An absconding activist of a jihadi outfit, allegedly involved in the attack on Karachi corps commander's convoy, was arrested on Thursday night during a raid conducted by the Crime Investigation Department.

The CID police, acting on an information, arrested Syed Andan Shah alias Tipu alias Mohammad, affiliated with the Jundullah, CID police DSP Raja Omar Khattab told Dawn. His other accomplices, including the ringleader of Jundullah, Ataur Rehman, had already been arrested and being tried in court for attacking the convoy. The DSP said that the intermediate passed Adnan alias Tipu, got trained in terrorism through Ataur Rehman.

Adnan was wanted in at least five terrorist acts, including the killing of Asif Choudhry, and parking an explosive-laden vehicle near the US Consulate, besides an attack on the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station killing five policemen, he added.

Adnan also confessed to having killed two Christians near Hasan Square in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, the DSP said. Giving details of the attack on corps commander convoy, Adnan confessed before police that he, along with Bilal, Usman, Shahzad, Yaqoob, and Qasim, wore police uniforms and came at the Clifton Bridge.

The convoy was late on that day but they waited for it. His other accomplices were also present in a van, a black Toyota Corolla and Alto cars, besides a motorcycle. They all were armed with Klashinkov rifles, TT pistols and two bags of explosives, the DSP said.

Adnan further told the police that the explosive bag, which was placed on the route of the convoy, did not explode on time and the vehicle of the corps commander was about to pass when all of them opened fire at the convoy but corps commander's vehicle passed away.

Khalid and Bilal took two Klashinkov rifles from an army vehicle which was in the convoy, the DSP said quoting Adnan. During the attack, Qasim was injured. Later, all were sent to their respective homes and on the next day, they came to know that the bag exploded near the bridge, Raja Omar said. Efforts were on to arrest Adnan's absconding accomplices, he added.
