Three garment cities being set up

KARACHI, Oct 13: Export Promotion Bureau is planning for setting-up three garment cities at Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad with the assistance of People's Republic of China to further improve and modernize garment industry in the country.

This was stated by vice chairman EPB, Abid Javed Akbar, on Wednesday during a briefing to a visiting 20-member Chinese delegation led by Ismail Tillwaldi, governor of Xinjiang, Uygur autonomous region, China.

He said that the government of China has allowed import of mangoes from Pakistan, which will provide a golden opportunity to Pakistani mango exporters to enter into Chinese market.

Abid Javed Akbar appreciated government of China for signing PTA and said that there was a lot of room for enhancing border trade between the two countries. He stressed upon the need for entering into joint venture in the field of textile, food products, marble and granite, light engineering sectors.

Ismail Tillwaldi speaking on the occasion said that annual border trade of $250 million between the two countries was insignificant as compared to its potential. Both the countries agreed for enhancing trade cooperation.

He also stressed upon the need for increasing trade volume between Xingjiang province of China and Pakistan. The Chinese delegation visited the EPB's export display centre and appreciated the range, quality of products, particularly marble, yarn, fans, bedlinen.
