Stolz hits title jackpot
LAS VEGAS, Oct 11: Australian Andre Stolz, way down in 217th place on the PGA Tour money list at the start of the tournament, scored a surprise victory at the $4 million Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday.
The 34-year-old from Brisbane claimed his first win on the circuit after firing a five-under-par 67 for a 21-under total of 266. Tag Ridings, who shot 11-under 61, Harrison Frazar (67) and overnight leader Tom Lehman (69) shared second place one stroke back.
Carl Pettersson of Sweden and Dicky Pride tied for fifth. Stolz became the fifth Australian to win on the tour this season after going out in a four-under 32 and snatching the outright lead with a birdie on the par-five 16th.
He recorded only one bogey over his final 54 holes as he picked up a victory which earned him a three-year tour exemption. Stolz, who has won three international events, had no top-10 finishes to his credit in 19 previous starts on the PGA Tour this season.
