KARACHI, Oct 9: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday asked the provincial government to chalk out a programme for renovation of Karachi and hold negotiations with the Asian Development Bank for funding.
He called for reconstruction of roads and improvement works with regard to water supply schemes, bypasses, underpasses and supply of electricity.
He issued these directives while presiding over a meeting on problems of Karachi held at the Governor's House.
Pointing out that the bank wants to do funding for an overall development of Karachi, the prime minister asked the provincial government to hold talks with them.
The provincial government, he suggested, should contact the federal government organizations and pursue them for construction of buildings and shopping malls. He called for resolution of the issue of land-sharing between the Sindh government and the Pakistan Railways.
He pointed out that owing to sheer delay in the decision-making, problems are growing and the land in question is falling under illegal occupation.
He also stressed the need for getting the issue of regularization of properties solved. He said that if a right decision is taken, it would lead to the start of development.
On the occasion, a detailed discussion was held on Karachi Mass Transit Scheme and Mr Shaukat Aziz asked the provincial government to complete the preliminaries in this regard.
The prime minister said he would have a detailed briefing on this issue and it is his desire that this project be undertaken at the earliest.
He said the provincial government should hold a meeting with the railways minister next week in which, among other things, the revival of Karachi Circular Railway should also be discussed.
In the meeting, the law and order situation was reviewed in detail. The prime minister said that police have played a significant role under difficult circumstances, but still there was a need for doing more work to create a sense of security among the people.-APP
