Pakistan dethrone India to lift cup

By Mohammad Yaqoob

LAHORE, Oct 6: Pakistan beat India to lift Indo-Pak Kirloskar Trophy winning with impressive margin of 16 and half points to seven and a half points at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf course on Wednesday.

It was the fourth consecutive victory of Pakistan over India in 2003-04. In September, 2003 Pakistan defeated India in Asia Pacific play off in Australia to earn fourth position.

Pakistan's second victory was at home when they beat India in an international team championship in Karachi in February and won the Saarc championship in Lahore this year.

"We have spent Rs 10 million on the tours of different teams to abroad and it is the result of that investment," Pakistan Golf Federation president Gen (retd.) Mohammad Tariq said.

On last day, Pakistan started the campaign with a big lead of eight and a half points to three and a half points and needed only four more points from 12 matches played on individual basis to ensure victory.

In the national team category, Pakistan won three ties but suffered a shock when national champion Shahid Javed Khan lost to Jaskirat S. Dullet tamely as the winner was four up at the 9th hole.

"Jaskirat played outstandingly while I committed mistakes and paid the penalty," Shahid said. "It was my day, otherwise, Shahid is a formidable rival," Jaskirat said. "We lost the trophy because the host team played better but we played with positive frame of mind and that is a good achievement," he further said.
