Nationalists to discuss constitutional amendments

By Saleem Shahid

QUETTA, Oct 6: The Jamhoori Watan Party President, Nawab Akbar Bugti, has said that the meeting of the heads of the four parties in the Baloch Alliance would be held soon for discussing constitutional amendments regarding Balochistan.

Speaking at a press conference in Dera Bugti on Wednesday evening, he said that his party proposed amendments to 50 articles of the Constitution. He said that his party had moved a bill in the senate proposing such amendments which was still pending in the upper house.

The constitutional experts of the government had studied it in detail and recently he was informed that the Constitutional Amendment Bill was divided into three categories.

In the first category those clauses were included which are acceptable to the government without any reservation. On the clauses in the second category, the government wanted to hold negotiations. The third category had been completely rejected by the government, the JWP President said.

He said that the constitutional experts of his party were examining these clauses on which the government wanted talks. "Those clauses, which concern Balochistan issues, would be examined in detail by them," Nawab Bugti said.

"The four-party Baloch alliance heads would take a joint decision on these clauses before sending back these suggestions to the government," the JWP chief said. The JWP chief was of the opinion that the Balochistan problem was basically constitutional in nature and he sought amendments in the Constitution to satisfy the legitimate aspirations of the Baloch people.

Referring to the slow pace of negotiations, the JWP president said it would require a lot of concentration before formulating any opinion and thus the process should be expedited.

He said the nationalist parties would hold a summit for which a date would be soon fixed. Answering to a question, he said that he had no communication with Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain, the PML President, after the government announced the names of parliamentary committee. Before that Mr Shujaat had been communicating with him, Nawab Bugti said.

Answering to another question, he said that the JWP as component party of Alliance for Restoration (ARD) was struggling with the alliance and his party leaders would participate in the proposed ARD meeting.
