KARACHI, Oct 6: The city government's cleanliness campaign remained in full swing on its second day in various towns and UCs of the city on Wednesday.

City Nazim Naimatullah Khan inspected cleanliness work in various towns in connection with the 10-day long campaign.

The drive in Landhi Town started by dumping heaps of filth, whitewashing trees, renovation of central islands, green belts. To make the drive effective, the Landhi Town administration announced prizes for citizens who would point out waste or filth in streets.

Likewise, in Bin Qasim Town, the town administration cancelled leaves of sanitary workers to make the drive successful. In Malir Town, the campaign was initiated form UC 6, Ghareebabad, where stagnant rainwater was pumped out.

Chairman of the campaign committee Gulshan Town Nazim Dr Abdul Wahab and other officials accompanied the city nazim during his visit to Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Jamshed towns. Nazims of both towns and concerned officials briefed the city nazim about plans for the campaign.

The city nazim observed the campaign to be going in a disciplined way according to plans, however, urged for achievement of desired results and objectives. He asked town and UCs nazims, and officials and staff involved in the campaign to take measures for maintaining improvement in sanitary conditions, adding that the measures should be made a matter of routine.

While visiting the Gulshan and Jamshed towns, he inspected work on main roads and internal streets; he talked to people during the visit and listened to their complaints regarding the campaign.

While visiting the Sherpao Basti, Naimat took strong notice of a garbage dumping site on one side of the road and decided to develop a park there, the cost for which would be met through a grant of Rs5.4 million given to UC by the city government.

The city nazim, respective nazims and others concerned also visited the Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Mahmoodabad, Bahadarabad, Alamgir Road, Stadium Road, and University Road.

He was told that graffiti had been removed on these roads and craters developed in these areas had been filled. Around five tonnes of garbage was removed from Gulshan town on Wednesday.

The city nazim asked UC Nazim Nasir Dawood to submit a report of buildings constructed after June 3 in these areas so that action could be taken against these structures.

During a visit to Jamshed Town, the city nazim was told that priorities had been set for various areas keeping in view the need for cleanliness. Some three tonnes of garbage was lifted from Lines Area on Wednesday, the nazim was informed.

Naimat also took notice of construction material used in various roads. During a visit to Mahmoodabad, he stopped after seeing sewerage water in a street and directed the water and sewerage department to operate a treatment plant round the clock for cleaning the area from the filthy water. - PPI
